Founded in 1996, Sophim is a French company established in Andalusia since 2014. Our production site based in Alméria is dedicated to the extraction of high-quality natural squalene, with a strong environmental commitment and a local-focused territorial anchoring.
Valorization of Agro-Food Industry By-Products
Sophim Iberia is located in Alméria, Andalusia, a region renowned for its numerous olive plantations. This proximity to producers reduces the environmental costs associated with transporting raw materials.
To achieve the most neutral ecological footprint possible, we valorize a by-product of the agro-food industry: a distillate from olive oil refining. This distillate possesses organoleptic properties that are incompatible with consumer expectations but offers other interesting qualities for the cosmetic sector, including a high concentration of squalene, approximately 0.7%.
Sophim Iberia processes this by-product through extraction, purification, and esterification. We support local producers in consolidating their incomes while maintaining a neutral impact on ecosystems.
The squalene is concentrated and transported to our production site in France. This concentration process and the choice of exclusively European production sites in Spain and France significantly reduce the carbon footprint related to transportation.

Circular economy for more sustainable and virtuous cosmetics
Giving this distillate a second life is just the first step in a circular economy approach. The extraction of squalene indeed generates new by-products, which are in turn valorized by Sophim Iberia to become valuable resources for local economic actors.
A portion of the distillate undergoes a transesterification process to be transformed into biodiesel. This biofuel is delivered directly to Spanish gas stations, contributing to European energy independence while reducing the environmental impact associated with the extraction of fossil fuels.
Other residues are incorporated into the composition of fertilizers that find local markets in Andalusia. These natural inputs contribute to more sustainable agriculture, respecting ecosystems and aquifer resources.
